The days are getting longer, the cold slowly fading and excitement building for the Land Rover West Rand Silverstar MTB Challenge.

It’s three weeks to go to race day and on 10 September Silverstar Casino and Hero Adventure Park on the West Rand will be a buzz of activity with cyclists taking on the event.

The race, now in its ninth edition, has seen growth every year and has provided cyclists with a delightful start to spring and some incredible trails.

ASG Events have teamed up with Hero Adventure to provide a spectacular network of trails on the mountain filled with lots of fun and amazing views – all adding up to a memorable ride.

The 20km and 40km routes are a true showcase of this amazing mountain and trail network.

Darren Herbst, ASG operational head, spoke about the event and what cyclists can expect in 2016.

“We worked really hard last year to revamp the look and feel of the event and this year, together with Silverstar and the logistics team, we’re stepping it up a notch again.

“The rain leading up to the event last year and on the day really put a damper on things, but the guys enjoyed it regardless and it has increased the excitement for this year.

“The sponsors have really come to the party in 2016, allowing us the freedom to implement a number of exciting changes.”

According to Herbst the start and finish remain at the Silverstar Casino where safe parking and tons of activities make it the perfect host venue.

From there cyclists head up the famous Krugersdorp Hill on the tar before making a left turn into Hero Adventure Park. Together with Mogale City, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and Hero Adventure, ASG Events have managed to secure a spectacular route that is jam packed with fun and excitement.

“These trails are custom built to excite,” enthuses Herbst. “There’s tons of single track, jumps, forest twists, berms floating bridges and so much more.

“It’s a trail where you never get board. The views and terrain are ever-changing and provides us with the opportunity to really create something special,” he said.

The elevation is on the 40km mostly consists of two climbs (the Krugersdorp Hill on tar and then the climb back up to Viewpoint from the valley). Besides that the terrain is filled with slight undulations.

“The 20km route is catered for the weekend warriors and is by no means hard, we have really tried to make it as fun as possible,” added Herbst.

“The descent back down to Silverstar from the top of the hill will probably be the most technical section, but it’s a lot of fun and the trail team have added a number of bridges and safe sections to ensure it’s ride-able for everyone.”

The 40km has a bit more bite with around 700m elevation. All the fun parts of the 20km have been included in the 40km with the addition of some sections for a tougher workout coupled with great rewards.

After tackling the exciting descent back to Silverstar riders head around the complex and straight into the finish in the main Piatto and food court.

“We’re excited about this finish because it will ensure that family and friends have enough to do while you are out on the ride. And they can sit at one of the many fine restaurants and watch you come in.

“Thereafter all visitors can enjoy an afternoon of great food and entertainment.”
